Eclectic Châtelet Theatre

Paris Prime Locations · February 2025 · 5 min read

A theatre built on a former prison, neighbour to the 'Crime Boulevard', and still one of the largest stages in Paris.

A theatre built on a former prison

Théâtre du Châtelet stands on a site that was, until the early 19th century, a fortified prison watching over the Seine. When Baron Haussmann redesigned Paris, the prison was demolished and the square was opened up. Two twin theatres rose on either side — the Châtelet and the Théâtre de la Ville — and have faced each other ever since.

Inaugurated in 1862, the Châtelet was for decades the largest theatre in Paris: 2,500 seats, a stage wide enough to host horse-drawn chariots, and a programme that mixed melodrama, fairy tales and grand spectacle.

The "Crime Boulevard" next door

Just north, Boulevard du Temple earned its nickname the 'Boulevard du Crime' in the 1830s — not because of insecurity, but because every theatre lining it staged murders, beheadings and tragedies night after night for a public hungry for sensation.

Haussmann erased most of those theatres in 1862, and the Châtelet inherited part of that taste for spectacle. It was the address where Parisians came for shows that would now look like proto-cinema: storms, shipwrecks, real water on stage.

Modern reinventions

After a long programming twist towards operetta in the 20th century, the Châtelet was redesigned for opera and musical comedy. A 2017–2019 renovation refreshed the auditorium and the technical equipment — without touching the iconic 1862 facade.

Today, it programmes everything from Stephen Sondheim revivals to contemporary opera. A ticket can cost as little as 15€ for the upper balcony — one of the best deals in Parisian theatre.

Where to stay

From Duc de Choiseul, the Châtelet is a 15-minute walk through the historic 2nd arrondissement, past the Bourse and the Palais Royal. After a 11pm performance you can walk home — no taxi, no last metro panic. From Chess Studio, count 12 minutes on foot or one stop on metro line 4.
